Get into a historic mining area. Iron Creek lake is a great place to picnic. If you see the Sand Creek Falls, you have spent considerable time in Wyoming.

The actual Sand Creek Falls is no longer assessable but if the water is running the Double Falls are a treasure to view. Sand Creek when vigorously flowing is a beautiful golden creek. The Sand Creek water crossing was the location wagons used to cross the creek.

Another water crossing in the area is the Beaver Creek Crossing.

Ghost towns in this are include: Tinton Ghost Town, Mineral Hill Ghost Town, and Nugget City Ghost Town. The Mineral Hill Ghost Town is accessible by ATV. The big Mineral Hill mill and the buildings from the community that surrounded it are gone. Some foundations are still visible.

There is mystery in the story of Potato Creek and the Potato Creek Nugget site.

Saw cabin and the buildings at Tinton Ghost town are viewable from the road but exist on private property.

The Bear Gulch Cemetery requires considerable hiking. But in the 1800’s it supported some of the goldfields in the area.

One of the most popular destinations in the Northern Black Hills is the Cement Ridge Fire Tower. This still active lookout was built by the Civilian Conservations Corps and finished in 1941.

On you way to the fire tower, is the Filmore Mine. The structure is on private property, but it is worth viewing as you drive by.

A large lake in the area is Iron Lake. Iron Creek, the creek that feeds it, is one of two creeks called Iron Creek in the Black Hills.

As you travel Trail 222 keep an eye out for Old Baldy peak.

There are 4-digit “permit required” trails on this drive.
